The difference between metonymy and synecdoche is that in metonymy, the term you are usin is linked to the thing you mean, but not directly. In synecdoche, part equals whole and thing equals concept. There is a theory that ALL written language is metonymy..as a word can only be representative by the idea of the thing it is ntended to portray. Perhaps these phrases are both? Why do so many Christians turn the other way, when questioned about the dangerous influence Oprah has on people in America? I mean, most people know she's a new-ager with ties to a certain politician (who shall remain nameless), whose opinions are very liberal and anti-Christian. She's very charismatic, and millions of women across the world take everything she says as the gospel truth. It's like she has some sort of mental control over people. One afternoon, I saw her teaching her audience Yoga techniques, while most of them blindly followed along like lemmings scurrying off a cliff. But if you ask a lot of women in America (even Christians), they will say: "You shouldn't judge other people like that; she's a respectable, self-made woman". Is everyone blind or something?
